Traveling abroad can be a most wonderful time of your life, UNTIL you find yourself in a foreign hospital, and then you begin to wonder “Am I covered?” The best approach is wonder no more, just make sure you put “Travel Insurance” on your “Traveling the World” checklist. Here’s a bit of good news, it’s likely cheaper than you may have thought. And I think it is a no-brainer when you are already spending a minor fortune on the trip itself. You can self-quote in about one minute and see just how affordable it might be. Look for the link at bottom of this article. Or visit www.LouisianasMarketplace.com (6th bullet point under “Our Services)
The truth is, your current policy may very well have some coverages, IF it is considered an “emergency” and your U.S. based health coverage “decides” that they will cover you to some extent. Of course, that’s very much after the fact, and you would likely be responsible for all short-term “out-of-pocket” expenses while abroad. Yes, many European countries may “have you covered” regarding an ER visit, but sometimes ER visits require ongoing care, such as a follow-up doctor visit or prescriptions needed.
And what if you need to be evacuated back home for follow-up care, whether for a needed surgery or treatment thereafter. That could be awfully expensive, and I would imagine quite difficult to arrange. Be aware, U.S. Medicare does not cover medical expenses overseas.
Like I mentioned earlier, getting a quote is super easy, and you can establish a Tavel Medical Policy via GeoBlue, Blue Cross’ answer to Travel Health Coverage in just a few short minutes. You can choose a Million Dollars of coverage with a $0 deductible, virtually eliminating any potential risk while traveling. Other options are available to make it even more affordable.
The vast majority of my clients are with Blue Cross, and yes, for the most part your health coverage does not extend the U.S. borders. So, check with your private health carrier if different, so you can “wonder no more!”
So, to answer the Q: “Do I really need Travel Insurance?” I’d say YES!
